The Ishi Yama Judo Club was founded at the YMCA by Sensei Paul Knoll in the 70s, and after moving a few times the club settled at the Acadia Recreation Complex. Sensei Paul Knoll founded the club with the vision to "teach Judo utilizing the principles of Professor Jigoro Kano to young and old alike. To help aspiring athletes reach an Olympic or world class level of proficiency."
The Club's main goals are to,
- To promote greater public awareness of the sport.
- To increase the number of participants in the sport and in the efficient administration of the sport.
- To develop and maintain qualified Judo Officials and Coaches in Calgary.
- To develop high performance athletes in Calgary.
- To have qualified facilities and equipment in Calgary.
- To promote Judo as a lifelong interest.
- To develop competitive and recreational opportunities in Calgary.
